Jelly Fish and Sea Star

Jelly fish shapes range from classic to bizarre; from nearly microscopic tinkerbells to golden giants whose bells loom larger than beach umbrellas. Stripes, polka dots, rainbow rows, jewel-like hues—jellies come in a spectacular array of colors and patterns.

Featured below is the Purple-Striped Jelly (Chrysaora colorata)

Sea stars (also known as starfish) are spiny, hard-skinned animals that live on the rocky sea floor. These invertebrates are NOT fish; they are echinoderms. Sea stars move very slowly along the sea bed, using hundreds of tiny tube feet. There are over 2,000 different species of sea stars worldwide. Sea stars are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat clams, oysters, coral, fish, and other animals.

  1. Saw all the lovely pictures Aamir, stunning colours, If nature cannot humble me what else can ? only 30% of species are above water, rest under water. and we do not know them all.

  6. Thanks rauf. Yes, this is the part of nature we neglect to see and the part of nature we are unconsciously driving to the point of extinction. This aquarium is making all possible effort to save some of the near extinct species which cannot otherwise survive in the polluted waters. I love this place, i feel sad that these species are confined to limited spaces, but i feel happy at the same time that they are being taken care of

  8. Hi ekta, glad you liked the pics. Yes, they all were taken by me, but not underwater. These were taken at an Aquarium here which tries to simulate the natural environment of these species as much as possible. It was kind of hard to get these pics, the ambient light was very very low, the subjects had hard spot lighting on them and most of them wouldnt stay still, the thick glass walls were smudged with fingerprints on one side and grime on the other side, the water was kinda turbid, i was kept constantly being bumped into by the over-excited-hyper-kids. These are a few of the good pics from the hundreds i took. Someday, i will go snorkelling and get the real underwater pics, but i will do it only when i find a water proof case for my camera and lens.
    Take care

  9. hi ajay, thanks for the compliments. Yes, the sea star was really cool, but very hard and rough to touch. They move really slow, so you can be sure they would be the last thing to attack you under water. lol

the only black pearl i am interested now is of Jack Sparrow ;) Can't wait to see that movie. Did you see Pirates of the Caribbean?

  14. hi kathy, yes. Global warming is a killer. Dumping to the bay is also a killer which we all must stop at once. If we continue to do so, the only place where we would find such beautiful species is online because they would have been extinct in the sea. Hope the heat is treating you well. Its frickin hot here.

  25. Hi keshi...
yes, they always fascinate me. I love fishies, but my wife like animals bcos she can pet them. This is where we differ :)

Apologies for the late reply, had a crazy schedule going on here... Things seem to be a bit okay now. Have to start posting soon.

  31. Hi Frida, my apologies for not commenting on your blog. Been having a crazy schedule off late. As for your question...

I shot 99% of those pictures in manual mode with flash turned OFF. I kept the camera lens as close as possible to the glass wall to avoid the reflections of people and background light getting into the picture. If you see the octopus pic closely, you would know what i mean.

In general, I never use flash.
I hate using flash for the following reasons...
    1. The mood of the picture is lost
    2. Pictures appear flat
    3. Soft edges are sharpened and picture is overexposed
    4. flash is not effective if subject is beyond 10 feet
    5. flash is not good for kids and animals

i can go on and on talking about this, but dont wish to bore you ;)

    Take care -ari
