Footprints in the Sand

One night I had a dream-
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with God.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there was only one.

I noticed that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
so I said to God,

“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most difficult times of my life,
there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.

Why,
when I needed you most,
you were not there for me?”

God replied,
“My precious child,
I love you,
and would never leave you.
The times when you saw only one set of footprints,
was when I was carrying you.”

Mary Stevenson, 1936

  10. Those are great pictures to go with that poem. Very nice! That poem never seems to get old, doesn't it?

It was interesting to see who it was written by, too. I'd always thought it was entirely anonymous.

  18. Thank you Keshi,
Have faith in God. If it werent for the sad days, you will never appreciate the happy days. If it were for the bad times, you will never be able to thank god for the good times.

Steve's death was a big shock to me too. He was a dare devil and a person who liked to live life on the edge. May his soul rest in peace.

    Hugsss to you toooo.

  22. ellesapple,
welcome to my blog and thanks for the comments. It still remains one of my fav poems though i have heard it over a hundred times.

There is a big history behind this poem. Three poets have claimed this poem to be their own creation.

    Mary Stevenson, 1936
    Carolyn Carty, 1963
    Margaret Fishback Powers, 1964

The three versions varied slightly but conveyed the same meaning. It was confusing to point this to a particular poet, and hence it began circulating as anonymous.

  35. Hey there, Ari! So sorry for the very late reply! If it weren't for school, I'd have commented long ago!

I read this when you first posted it and it was very uplifting! I'm so glad you made that connection between your photos and the poem-which I've heard once or twice before. Lovely!
